Alario is the nom de guerre for a 55 year old man from the deep South in the USA. A recovering Southern Baptist, I searched through various interdenominational, non-denominational, charismatic and home churches and settled eventuall and quite comfortably in the Anglican communion. I stopped attending church at the age of 12 and until the age of 22 proved that lost sheep do go astray and that sin hath pleasure, for a season. It always takes it toll, its pound of flesh. During those years, I led a rather schizophrenic life. Athletically and musically gifted, I went to school and played sports by day for fun, fame and girls and played music (drums) by night and on weekends for fun, money and, well, girls. I had more discretionary income then than I have ever had at any other time in my life. This was in the late 60s, early 70s and discretionary income went to fun, cars, clothes, drugs, wine, women and song. At 22, in college, the string ran out and I took stock of myself. Mene, Meme Tekel Upharsin. I tried to examine myself in the light of the 10 Commandments with predictable results. I eliminated all that I believed contributed to my deep sense of despair. I tried to develop my own "code" to live by and failed at that. Deeply aware of, for lack of a better phrase, my sinfulness before God, I called out in prayer to a Jesus I had spurned, mocked and dismissed to prove who he really was. He did and has been faithful from then to now even though I have not. I have been married to my college sweetheart for nearly 30 years and we have raised 5 children. We have four granddaughters. I love to read, listen to music, watch movies and play golf. My reading tastes are eclectic though I have a preference toward reading history and biographies. Music tastes are wacked out, everything from Verdi to Dropkick Murphys; from Elvis to the Belfast Cowboy. It’s getting harder and harder (for me) to call a movie great. Most of those (for me) are older and some are serious and some are not so serious. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence. Shane. The Godfathers I and II. The Best Years of Our Lives. Tunes of Glory. The Informer. 12 O Clock High. The Magnificent Ambersons. And some more recent-Run, Lola, Run. Magnolia. The Departed. Million Dollar Baby. We attend what I would call an orthodox Anglican church. 1928 American Prayer Book, 1940 Hymnal, weekly Communion, Morning Prayer the first Sunday of the month followed by Communion. We are a odd lot of cradle Episcopalians, former Presbyterians, seekers, doctors, lawyers, academics, architects, construction types, old, young, rich, poor and everything in between. I am a door keeper in the house of our Lord. And I am happy. Alario
