The other day I was having a discussion with a friend about the different theories of atonement. As I am not a theologian my first source of information was of course wikipedia. However, for once wikipedia let me down - I was appalled with the content! Normally wikipedia articles are thoughtful, comprehensive and well written, however in this case the page had been entirely written from one view point, and contained biased information that even I could spot. I immediately tried to report it to the “theology” wikiproject, however found that no such thing existed. Yes different denominations and sects had their own projects, however there was no “theology” project as a whole.
Initially I tried to contribute my own edits to the atonement page, but soon realized the task was beyond me. I simply do not have the time to research, write and argue a relevant article and hopefully fairly neutral viewpoint. I then remembered this website.
I was lucky enough to attend the 2004 Future of the People of God conference, and contribute to this website a bit when it first started. Would the remit of editing an international open source encyclopedia fall within the remit of the opensource theology project? I think wikipedia represents one of the most exciting sources of information on the web. I cannot think of a more worthwhile task than contributing to it’s valuable database.
