As you understand it, what will be the final fate of those who die without faith in Christ?

51% think non believers will suffer eternal punishment

I am asonished at the results of this poll- that 51% of respondents think that those who die without belief in Christ will suffer eternal conscious punishment or worse. This suggests a degree of hubris and callousness that is very disturbing. > Paul Hartigan

If you're truly astonished, y

If you’re truly astonished, you’ve been hanging around in limited circles. There are many evangelicals who arrive at just such a conclusion based on New Testament texts such as Mt. 25:46 (a few of them see the need to read that text in conjunction with others such as Acts 4:12). I’ve also heard it from non-Christians who cite it as a reason for wanting to have nothing to do with God.

Frankly, though, this post—being half “horse laugh” and half ad hominem—comes across more like a troll to me than anything else.

why impugn my honesty?

You are of course right- I am a Quaker and I live in Australia and I do not know all that many evangelicals, at least those of American mind-set(presumably the majority of respondents). Belief in the eternal damnation of unbelievers would, I think, have much lower incidence in this country among those who are avowedly Christian and would attract a hostile response from the great majority who will have no truc with organised religion- as you say, it is the kind of reason many give for wanting to have nothing to do with God.

I can assure you that my expression of astonishment at this poll was quite genuine, though my attitude could be more correctly described as dismay. What’s a troll?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN to ‘die without faith in Christ’?

I am not trying to steer this chat down a never ending road, so please - no answers! But hey, there would have to be some huge underlying assumptions in any answer to the question Andrew.  So I guess as we pollsters say the results would not be particularly statistically significant!

Any way, let’s hope and pray that the Lord will be as merciful as possible given the circumstances.
