667: The Neighbor of the Beast

I long ago abandoned Futurist escatology of my childhood, but of course continued to be completely oriented by it’s attendent worldview, mission and purpose for the Church today.

The Preterist interpretation of scripture has been the most satisfying alternative, but nowhere have I been able to find the question, “How shall we then live?” answered from the preterist viewpoint. Such a radical change in escatology had to mean a refinement on worldview, mission and purpose for the Church today, but what were they?

Thank you for the insights into that issue in this article. I look forward to reading more.

The preterist dilemma

Brett, I think that’s right - a succinct analysis of the preterist dilemma. It is essential that any reassessment of eschatology should not diminish the motivation for worship, mission or righteousness. My argument would be that by locating the eschatological crisis in the past we do not put an end to mission, etc. Rather this establishes the historical and theological foundation, starting-point, for the existence of a renewed people of God who have inherited the promise given to Abraham and who are impelled by the Spirit into the world.
