Re: Shane Claiborne and the rich young ruler
‘Although, lets face it, not everyone has the same passions and leads the same life as Shane does and I believe it is all for a good reason.’
It is true that the life that Shane Claiborne has chosen to live in response to his reading of the scriptures, is more radical than most of us would like to accept for ourselves. Even so there is a naging guilt in many of us as Christians that maybe there is more truth to what Claiborne says, than we’re willing to admit. There is something fresh and spontaneous and right about what Claiborne is addressing, but we just can’t see ourselves going that far.
Back in the 1970’s it was Keith Green who was stirring the church with his radical approach to Christian living, and following him Rich Mullins. Each of them stirred the church in renewing our passion for living a life completely for Christ. Realigning our purpose to worship Christ and Christ alone. Put aside the gods of materialism and consurmerism, and put Christ first in our lives. There is no doubt a certain seasonality to this radical approach, but serves the purpose of drawing the church back to its original calling.
I would say that in our postmodern world, a Shane Claiborne is sorely needed. We may find his Christian lifestyle hard to sustain, but it speaks to a society that is aching for life that is lived with passion and purpose. There is a desire for openness to dialogue with all who are genuinely searching for spiritual truth, that our lives match what we say.
