Re: Emerging Visions of Hell: What are their consequences

The New Testament seems to me quite clear on how a person marks the transition from darkness to light, from the macrocosm to the microcosm, from a creation subject to decay to a creation subject to renewal: baptism. It is a concrete, public sign of a concrete, public action. The whole sinner’s prayer business was not meaningless or wrong, but it was very private and very subjective. What the church needs as it emerges from modernism is a sign of entry into a community that takes very seriously the lordship of Christ, the renewing presence of the Spirit, and the mission of God.
