Re: The Virgin Birth dilemma
NinjaHound - thanks. Just some quick responses:
1. In your response concerning genealogies - you don’t address the issue. I’ve no doubt that Jewish observation of the requirements of the Torah is very specific - and in its own way, an extra-biblical interpretion. Jesus made his own interpretation about keeping the sabbath - as Lord of the sabbath.
2. Your argument about ‘seed’ is the heart of the matter over which Jesus confronted the Pharisees. They prided themselves on the purity of their racial descent from Abraham, at the same time insinuating that Jesus did not have this pure racial descent - John 8. Jesus argues that the true descendants of Abraham are those who share his faith. This is the perspective which should govern an understanding of the NT. The genealogies of Matthew 1 and Luke 3 do establish that Jesus’s line goes back to David - and Abraham; yet in an equally important respect they do not - he was born of God. Do you believe in a literally resurrected King David as messiah (from Ezekiel 34:20-22) - in contrast to Acts 2:29-30 (where Peter has no problem in declaring Jesus to be one of David’s descendants)?
3. Isaiah continues to develop the theme of Immanuel in Isaiah 8 - in the context of the same Assyria, the same threat, and the continuation of God’s protection - v.8, v.10. In v.18, Immanuel (the real individual of that time, whoever it was) is changed into the category of metaphor. In Isaiah 9, the metaphor is applied to a child yet to be born.
4. I was referring to Ezekiel’s temple, not New Jerusalem of Revelation (which did not contain a temple). It’s not as big as that, but too big to fit on the temple mount in Jerusalem. I agree that everything about the temple suggests, to us, a literal blueprint. The issue is whether Jesus, in himself, fulfilled the requirements of the temple, and made it redundant.
5. Not really sure what your point is. Would Judaism also cease to exist without the bible - which, in its current forms, relies just as much on interpretation as Christianity. Jessica Alba? Take a dose of Matthew 5:27-30 followed by 2 Timothy 6:11.
