Re: The Virgin Birth dilemma

Re: The Virgin Birth dilemma

NinjaHound, I’m broadly in agreement with Peter in responding to your comments. I disagree with your literalistic interpretation of prophecy, for a couple of reasons. First, prophetic language is highly metaphorical - which is not the same as saying that it is entirely metaphorical or that it has no truth value or that it does not refer to anything in the real world. Secondly, I think Jesus forces a radical reinterpretation of Israel’s hope that must be taken into account when we consider the manner in which Old Testament prophecy is ‘fulfilled’ in Christ.

In that regard I would suggest that your statement ‘Without the proper biological descent, he’d be put to death as a heretic!!!’ is (ironically) perceptive. I don’t know whether Jesus believed he was biologically descended from David or not, but he certainly shocked the custodians of biblical literalism and in effect got himself killed as a heretic. It seems to me that your reading of Ezekiel would keep you within a literalistic biblical Judaism, but I think Jesus saw the impending judgment on Jerusalem as a decisive disruption of biblical Judaism - so that to be in Christ is precisely not to follow the literalistic trajectory that you have described.
