Re: The Virgin Birth dilemma
“Blind Faith is FOOLISH Faith. There is a reason, an answer for everything, it is up to us to seek and find that Truth.”
So you don’t think we should interpret the Bible literally? Are you saying everything is a metaphore?? As far as everything being “too philosophical” for me, it isn’t that I don’t comprehend, it’s that I don’t agree, and if you have a problem with what I’m saying, that’s great. If everyone in the country had to drive a grey Honda, I’d be quite the unhappy camper. Our differences are what make us unique, and that is definately a plus. But concerning religion, and concerning our collective persuit of truth, (which is basically what religion is all about, a persuit of the truth), philosophy shouldn’t be the method of our beliefs. It could be involved in one way or another, but the real focus should be to find the answers to the WHY’s, and the HOW’s. Is your belief in gravity or electricity based on philosophy?!? Of course not! You believe that your car will fall to the ravine below if you veer off the bridge. You know it, with certainty, because of experience, having witnessed other items fall throughout your lifetime, and because you understand the concepts of gravity. You know it exists, and you have, at least a basic understanding of WHY gravity exists. Your belief in gravity has nothing whatsoever to do with philosophy.
It is not quite the same with religion, but on the flip side- we can only claim to be truth, or FACT, what we can PROVE to be truth, or fact. Philosophy is not evidence of something, it is an unproven idea about something. Truth is what is. Philosophy is a way of trying to understand what is. Without the Ark of Noah, we only have written scripture to help us understand the Ark of Noah. That understanding, with scripture being the only proof, is a speculative understanding.
But that’s the problem with religion, most of it isn’t based on tangible evidence, with the exception of archiology. So we only have written scripture if we choose to believe in God. If we assume that every time we open the book, everything that is written down is meant in some metaphoric sense, then we can believe whatever we want to believe, because we will find a way to see whatever we want written on the page. Oh, smoking pot is in Malachi, because because. I can’t view scripture that way. The truth of the matter is that there IS an answer for everything, there is a reason why, there is a how, and if I want to believe, then there has to be some way for me to view scripture in a believable way, hence my literal interpretations, not always, but most of the time. As for the events spoken of in Isaiah 7, surrounding Immanuell, how do you interpret them? From verse 1 to the end of the chapter? Is there a “philosophical outlook” required in it’s interpretation???????
